Academy of International Affairs NRW Fellowships 2024/25 (Fully funded in Germany)

The Academy of International Affairs NRW invites applications for fellowships for the 2024/25 cohort on the Geopolitics of Outer Space and other pressing research topics in the field of international politics. Senior and young researchers from all academic disciplines holding at least a doctoral degree, and practitioners from diplomatic services, politics, media, business, and civil society are invited to apply for the fellowship.
With growing geostrategic and economic importance, space has long since become the fifth domain of international politics, alongside land, sea, air, and cyberspace. However, research and debates about this important theme are still at the very beginning. The AIA NRW targets to open up an interdisciplinary platform and initiate discussions and collaborations in the field of Outer Space Affairs.
As the Academy’s central focus, through its Fellowship program, it promotes scientific and scholarly excellence and builds international and interdisciplinary connections.
Application is possible on two tracks:
- Academic Track (for senior and junior scholars)
- Practitioner’s Track (for experts from politics, business, and civil society)
In times of global transformation, changes, and new challenges, international action is required to secure the future of generations to come. The mission of the Academy of International Affairs (AIA NRW) is to play an active role in shaping these transformations. It invites the brightest minds from research, politics, and civil society to discuss new paths forward and envision solutions for the future.
At its core lies an international and interdisciplinary fellowship program, which invites outstanding candidates to spend several months in Bonn, Germany. The AIA NRW is an independent and non-partisan fellowship institute fully funded by the Federal State of North-Rhine Westphalia. It offers a perfect environment for study and mutual exchange.
The city of Bonn is the headquarters for many key actors in academia, media, the United Nations, and civil society. The AIA NRW aims to be a partner and host to these actors.
Benefits
- An individual agreement with each of the Fellows that takes into account the financial situation at their home institution.
- The costs of travel to and from Bonn and of accommodation while in residence will be borne by the Academy.
- Helps in the search for places in the local (international) schools, kindergartens, and crèches for partners and children will be provided by the Academy.
- The Academy will cover the accommodation costs.
- The Fellows get to work in the Academy’s building and can use it as a meeting place, also for guests whom the Fellows themselves can invite.
- Technical equipment and library service for research literature will be provided by the Academy.
Eligibility
- Citizens of all countries are eligible to apply
- Applicants must be outstanding and highly qualified scholars and/or scientists.
- Applicants from all disciplines who are researching in the Academy’s thematic area are eligible.
- Apart from political science, legal studies, economics, history, sociology and philosophy applications from science and technology studies are eligible once they address relevant issues of social dynamics.
Note: University faculties and younger scholars and scientists (holding at least a doctorate) are eligible for short-term fellowships and are experts with professional experience in the fields of politics, diplomacy, business, NGOs, and the media.
