My Lifelong Learning Journey: From One Online Course to a Global Learning Movement

I am Engr. Ako Eyo Oku, the Co-Founder and Chairman, Board of Trustees of Eureka Learners Foundation. In this article, I will narrate my lifelong learning journey from the days of my first MOOCs and how that translated to greater rewards. 

"Lifelong learning is not about collecting certificates; it is about collecting perspectives that transform how we live, lead, and serve." This belief has guided my life for more than a decade and continues to shape everything I do today.

Education has never been just a means of earning a certificate for me. It has been a journey of self-discovery, resilience, service, and transformation. Looking back, I realize that every opportunity I embraced, every course I completed, and every learner I supported has shaped not only my career but also my purpose in life.

My online learning journey began in 2014 when I joined the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Through YALI, I discovered the world of online learning and realized that some of the world's leading universities, organizations, and institutions were making quality education available to anyone with an internet connection and the determination to learn.

Curious and eager to grow, I enrolled in my first online courses. What started as a simple desire to improve myself soon became a lifelong passion. Every completed course inspired me to take another, and every new subject opened my mind to fresh possibilities.

Today, I have completed more than 150 online courses across over 40 learning platforms, studying topics that span education, leadership, humanitarian action, peacebuilding, disaster management, business management, communications, intercultural dialogue, tourism, digital skills, sustainable development, project management, and many other fields.

People often ask me why I continue learning after so many courses. My answer is always the same:

"Every course I complete introduces me to a possibility I never knew existed. Learning expands your world long before it changes your résumé."

Balancing continuous learning with a demanding career has never been easy. As a broadcast engineer with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), my work required long hours and immense dedication. Many nights, I studied after work, attended webinars, completed assignments, and prepared for assessments while others were asleep. Financial limitations, unreliable internet, and fatigue often stood in my way, but I refused to let them define my future.

Through these experiences, I came to understand something that would eventually change the direction of my life:

"Opportunities do not change lives simply because they exist; they change lives because someone discovers them."

As I continued learning, I noticed that many talented people around me were unaware of the countless free courses, scholarships, fellowships, and leadership programmes available worldwide. It wasn't a lack of ability that held them back—it was a lack of access to information.

That realization inspired me to establish the Global Learning Community Program (GLCP) in 2018.

GLCP was created with one clear purpose: to help people discover learning opportunities and encourage them to invest in themselves. What began as a small initiative soon evolved into a thriving learning community.

Over the years, more than 500 individuals benefited from GLCP, collectively completing over 1,200 online courses from universities, international organizations, and professional learning platforms. Beyond certificates, participants gained confidence, developed new skills, secured scholarships, advanced their careers, and transformed their lives.

Watching these transformations reinforced another belief that I hold dearly:

"Knowledge has the greatest impact when it is shared. Learning becomes meaningful when it creates opportunities for others."

In 2021, GLCP reached another important milestone when it received support through the Atlas Corps Leadership Institute (ACLI) Community Impact Fund. With this support and in collaboration with the International Business Management Institute (IBMI), Berlin, we launched the Impact-50 Programme, providing 50 emerging leaders from across Africa with scholarships to complete the Mini MBA programme.

Seeing learners from different African countries grow together reminded me that education has the power to transcend borders and unite people around a common purpose.

My passion for learning has never been limited to online courses alone.

Over the years, I have also promoted virtual intercultural learning through the Ubuntu Club Intercultural Exchange Program (UCIEP) of the Ubuntu Leaders Academy, where I have served as both a trainer and country coordinator. Through this programme, I have facilitated intercultural dialogue among young people from different countries, helping them appreciate diversity, develop leadership skills, and build meaningful international friendships.

Those experiences strengthened another conviction of mine:

"Learning is not only about gaining knowledge. It is about gaining understanding, appreciating differences, and discovering our shared humanity."

Online learning also became a gateway to many other global opportunities. It opened doors to fellowships, scholarships, grants, leadership programmes, residencies, conferences, and international collaborations.

These opportunities have enabled me to travel to 18 countries so far, connect with remarkable people from around the world, and become part of inspiring global networks, including the US Government Exchange Alumni, Bosch Alumni Network, Chatham House Common Futures Conversations, Ecoversities, and many others.

Every journey reminded me that the world is both my classroom and my community.

The success and impact of GLCP eventually inspired the establishment of the Eureka Learners Foundation (ELF).

What started as a platform for promoting online courses has evolved into a global learning movement that connects people with scholarships, fellowships, grants, internships, conferences, competitions, jobs, and other opportunities for personal and professional development.

Today, Eureka Learners Foundation supports thousands of learners worldwide through its website, blog, social media platforms, and learning community. Every day, we connect individuals with opportunities that help them build knowledge, develop skills, advance their careers, and create positive change within their communities.

Our mission remains simple:

Educate. Empower. Elevate.

When people ask me what success means, my answer is different from what many expect.

"Success is not measured by the number of certificates hanging on your wall. It is measured by the number of lives transformed because you chose to keep learning and keep sharing."

Looking back, I realize that the certificates I have earned tell only a small part of my story. The real achievement lies in developing the discipline to keep learning despite challenges, embracing unfamiliar ideas, and using knowledge to serve others.

My journey is far from over.

There are still books to read, courses to complete, cultures to understand, places to explore, and lives to impact.

If there is one message I hope my story leaves with every reader, it is this:

Never stop learning.

• Your background does not determine your future.
• Your current circumstances do not define your potential.
• One course can introduce you to a new passion.
• One scholarship can change your career.
• One opportunity can change your life.
• And one person who chooses to share what they know can inspire thousands more.

My journey began with a single online course in 2014. 

Today, it has become a lifelong mission to ensure that others discover the same opportunities that transformed my life.

Because I have come to believe that when one person learns, a life changes; when learning is shared, the world changes.
