May is Bladder Cancer Awareness Month, and it's crucial to shed light on this often overlooked but significant health concern globally. Bladder cancer, though less common than other types, can be deadly if not detected and treated early. In this article, we'll explore the basics of bladder cancer, its risk factors, symptoms, and preventive measures tailored to the Nigerian context.
- Bladder cancer arises from abnormal cell growth in the bladder lining, often linked to exposure to carcinogens such as tobacco smoke, certain chemicals, and chronic bladder infections. While anyone can develop bladder cancer, certain factors increase the risk, including advanced age (especially 55 years and older), male gender, and a family history of the disease.
- Recognizing the symptoms of bladder cancer is crucial for early detection and prompt treatment. Symptoms often include blood in the urine (hematuria), frequent urination, pain or burning sensation during urination, and pelvic or low back pain. It's essential not to ignore these symptoms and seek medical evaluation if they persist.
- Prevention plays a pivotal role in reducing the incidence of bladder cancer. Quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and avoiding exposure to harmful chemicals are key preventive measures. Additionally, incorporating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help reduce the risk of bladder cancer.
- Regular screenings and check-ups are vital for individuals at higher risk, such as smokers or those with a family history of bladder cancer. Screening tests, including urine tests, cystoscopy, and imaging studies, can help detect bladder cancer early, when it is most treatable.

In Nigeria, raising awareness about bladder cancer is essential for early detection and improving outcomes. Healthcare providers, community leaders, and advocacy organizations play a crucial role in educating the public about bladder cancer risk factors, symptoms, and preventive measures. Access to quality healthcare services and diagnostic facilities is also crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment.
This month of May, the Blue-Pink Center for Women’s Health, in collaboration with the World Bladder Cancer Patients Coalition (WBCPC), is leading the campaign against bladder cancer in Nigeria under the banner BladderAlert Naija: Igniting Change, Inspiring Hope. As we observe Bladder Cancer Awareness Month, let's join hands to spread awareness, promote preventive measures, and support individuals affected by bladder cancer. By raising awareness and taking proactive steps, we can work towards reducing the burden of bladder cancer and improving the health and well-being of our communities.
